Battledogs (TV Film 2013) When werewolf virus is unleashed upon New York, and Major Hoffman looks for a cure while Lt. General Monning wants to establish a new canine army.
Battledogs is the latest monster movie from The Asylum, although for once this isn’t attempting to rip-off a recent blockbuster. Although undeniably crap this is slightly more accomplished than their normal efforts both in the story and acting departments. A woman, bitten by a wolf whilst on holiday, turns into a werewolf at the airport and spreads a virus
through the victims. The military contain the monsters/victims but have ulterior motives for the quarantine and want to weaponize the werewolves.
I’ll be honest, I was onboard with the film as soon as Bill ‘Mac’ Duke turned up as the President. Yet he isn’t the only familiar face in the film with Wes Studi, Ernie Hudson and Dennis Haysbert all getting prominent roles. Even the girl from Jurassic Park, Ariana Richards, stars in the lead. Their appearances all help make the performances far better than the standard Asylum movie.
Even though the story is predominantly confined to a single location, save for the laughable large scale sequences through New York, it ticks along at a good rate and features enough action to stop it from becoming too boring. Naturally the special effects during these action set pieces are pretty atrocious, particularly when more than one werewolf is on screen, but this is to be expected when working with such limited funds.
Whilst not as much fun as Ghost Shark et al - it simply treats the story too seriously despite the silly premise and shoddy effects - it does at least pass the time. It’s only a shame that Bill Duke got so little to do, I was hoping for at least one President vs werewolf knife fight. Maybe they’ll save that one for the sequel.
